Malangi was one of the most well-known bark painters from Arnhem Land and a significant figure in contemporary Indigenous Australian art. The now extinct Australian one dollar note featured David Malangi Daymirringu’s bark painting, Mortuary Feast of Gurrmirringu. The use of his painting marked the first Aboriginal copyright dispute, as the Reserve Bank of Australia did not seek permission to reproduce Malangi’s artwork.
