Baltji is a long edible yam, a staple food source for Yolngu people in the Arafura Wetlands, traditionally harvested by Yolŋu miyalk (women) using digging sticks. They carry the gathered bush food in hand-woven baskets or scoops known as mewana or mindirr (dilly bags), which are woven out of native grasses and pandanus fibres.
Baltji is also a significant Dhuwa totem, who's songline belongs to the Gurrulpa clan group.
