Rarrk
Artist:
Rarrk is the traditional cross-hatching technique practised by Yolngu artists of Arnhem Land. Built from thousands of fine, hand-painted lines, this distinctive style reflects remarkable precision, skill, and a deep connection to cultural tradition.
The delicate layers of cross-hatching create a sense of movement, light, and rhythm across the surface. While each artist brings their own style and perspective, rarrk is often used to express relationships with Country, the natural world, and ancestral knowledge. Some aspects of these works are shared openly, while others remain the cultural knowledge of the artist, their family, and community.
