Margaret Djarbalarbal Malibirr is a senior Yolŋu fibre artist from the Ganalbingu clan and a highly respected member of Bula’bula Arts. She is best known for her traditional ceremonial works that incorporate natural materials such as balgurr (kurrajong bark), feathers, and gunga (pandanus spiralis).

Margaret is celebrated for her deep mastery of traditional weaving techniques, including the careful harvesting and preparation of pandanus leaves and other natural fibres. She is regarded as particularly skilled in creating balgurr fibre creations and natural bush string, selecting the freshest materials and preparing dyes with expertise passed down through generations.

One of the most established weavers at Bula’bula Arts, Margaret has had her works included in a remarkable range of Australian and international group exhibitions since 1989, helping to share the rich cultural heritage of Arnhem Land weaving traditions with audiences across the world.

Her practice reflects not only artistic excellence but also cultural continuity, connecting Yolŋu ceremonial traditions with contemporary art contexts. Margaret’s work stands as a testament to the enduring strength and beauty of Yolŋu fibre art.
