Originating from ceremonial body designs and evolving to paintings on barks with ochres, the painters from Ramingining are highly regarded and recognised throughout the world, with works held in major collections both nationally and internationally. Using only traditional colours: red ochre, yellow ochre, white (clay) and black (charcoal), the paintings hold and tell stories of deep cultural significance for Yolngu people as well as engaging broader emotional response and understanding because of authenticity, high quality aesthetic and technical execution and mastery of cultural storytelling abilities.

The bark is collected from the stringy bark tree and treated with heat to flatten it and then the bark is dried before the surface is prepared ready to paint.
